UNIT 2  LESSON 2: ABROAD

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ABROAD?

Andy:     Hey Justin. How are you?

Justin:    I’m fine thanks. How are you?

Andy:     I’m OK, thanks. I’d like to ask you a question.

Justin:    No problem. Go ahead.

Andy:     Have you ever been abroad?

Justin:    Yes, I have visited many countries. Last year I went to Italy and the

year before I visited my cousins in Denmark.

Andy:     What have you done in Italy?

Justin:    I have camped there with a friend of mine. We have visited many

               towns to see the sights.

Andy:     Which sights did you like most?

Justin:    I think that the buildings in Rome were the most beautiful sights I

have ever seen. They were the oldest and most interesting things for me. But my friend Peter                  didn’t like them so much. He liked the countryside in Tuscany the most.

Andy:     And have you met people there too? Have you met locals?

Justin:    Yes, we have. An uncle of mine lives in Rome, so we went to visit him and his family.

Andy:     Have they got children your age?

Justin:    Yes, they have. And fortunately they speak English, so we were able

to talk to one another easily.

Andy:     What was most different from the Dutch culture in Italy?

Justin:    I think the food culture was very different from ours. They really take time for their meals. The                meals they eat are eaten slowly and

they talk constantly to each other.

               In a very relaxed way.

               But when they have got

               a difference, they start

               speaking very loudly

               and are easily agitated.

               Italian people are extremely

               easily excited over virtually anything.

That’s kind of funny and sometimes it scares me, especially when they seem to be angry with                each other. And you know what happens next? When you think they are really going to fight?                  They stop talking aggressively and talk nicely to each other again.

It was kind of hard to get used to that. But eventually we were able to get used to it.

Andy:     Wow! I wish I had relatives abroad. I would really like to get to know what people are really                  like.

Justin:    Well, next year I am going to visit my cousins in Switzerland. They have got totally different                    habits than we have. Maybe you could come!

Andy:     I would really like that! A lot!! See you soon, Justin.

Justin:    See you around Andy.
