
Adjectives and adverbs
An adjective is a word that says something about a noun
a beautiful woman: Woman =noun beautiful = an adjective
a nice girl: girl = noun nice = an adjective
An adverb is a word that does NOT refer to a noun
An adverb is the adjective with LY
soft - softly
nice nicely
so:
She called loudly. (Loudly doesn't refer to a noun)
They asked nicely. (Nicely doesn't refer to a noun)
She speaks English very well. (well doesn't refer to a noun)
He drives extremely fast. ( extremely refers to fast and that is not a noun) (fast doesn't refer to a noun so it is an adverb but it doesn't get ly)
EXCEPTIONS
some adverbs do not get LY:
fast - fast
hard - hard (hardly means almost not)
good - well
AFTER SENSES:
She always looks good.
This food really smells delicious.
This music sounds good.
The water feels cold.
That soup tastes wonderful.
