The Gerund

FORM:  VERB + ING

USE:

  • After verbs that express likes/dislikes

Like/Love/enjoy  DO NOT PUT A GERUND AFTER WOULD LIKE/WOULD LOVE

Dislike/hate /don't mind/can't stand

I hate swimming/I like eating spaghetti.

I can't stand playing football/I don't mind helping.

  • After stop/start (begin)

 

Please start working

Stop talking now!

 

  • When the word is in the first place in the sentence:

Reading the newspaper is what I do first every morning.
Getting out of bed eary in the weekend is what I hate most of all.

Singing is my favourite pastime. 

  • After prepositions :

interested in ...

instead of ...

good at ...

before ... after 

He is interested in reading.

Instead of playing football he studied for the test.

I am very good at speaking Russian

Before going to bed I always drink a cup of tea.

 

  • After certain expressions :

it's no use ...

it's no good ...

there's no point in ....

It's no use asking because you know you can't.

It's no good screaming because I won't hear you anyway.

There's no point in crying because you won't get candy anyway.
