TAGS

 

A TAG is a small question attached to a sentence.

 

 

Form: AM, IS, ARE +(evt) NOT + personal pronoun

(= I/YOU/HE/SHE/IT/WE/YOU/THEY)

 

VB: The weather is nice, isn’t it?

        She is late, isn’t she?

        We aren’t early, are we?

 

STEPS

 

  • repeat AM, IS, ARE

  • is NOT before the comma, then NO NOT after the comma

  • no  NOT before th comma, then NOT after AM, IS of ARE 

  • repeat a short subject (eg. he, I, we)

  • shorten subject: their mother =SHE. Those books =THEY.

That dog = IT.

 

VB: Those books are yours, aren’t they?

        The bus is late, isn’t it?

        The children aren’t outside, are they?

 

With CAN and HAVE it works the same way.

 

         You can swim, can't you?

         John can drive a car, can't he?

         Jason and Sarah can't sell their house, can they?

 

         The kids have got their things, haven't they?

         George has got an old car, hasn't he?
